How to Communicate Science C.L.E.A.R.ly

Use this simple framework to make science understandable and memorable.

When it comes to science communication, the biggest challenge is often making complex concepts understandable and memorable for your audience. That’s why I developed the C.L.E.A.R. framework during my advanced science communication workshop for sustainability professionals. This simple, five-step tool helps anyone—from scientists to educators—craft engaging, audience-focused messages that stick. Let’s break down what C.L.E.A.R. stands for:

C – CORE idea
What’s the main takeaway? Start with the essence of your message—the one thingyou want your audience to remember. Clarity begins by focusing on what truly matters.

L – Layer details gradually
Too much information all at once can overwhelm your audience. Instead, reveal details step by step, building on what they already know.

E – Everyday analogies
Relate complex concepts to familiar ideas. Analogies rooted in everyday experiences make science relatable and easier to grasp.

A – Audience perspective
What matters most to them? Tailor your message by considering your audience’s interests, concerns, and level of understanding. It’s about meeting them where they are.

R – Relatable stories and visuals
Use descriptive language, personal stories, and vivid imagery to make your message real and engaging. People remember stories and images more than abstract ideas.

How to Use C.L.E.A.R.The C.L.E.A.R. framework is designed to be flexible, whether you’re crafting a presentation, writing a blog post, or speaking with stakeholders. Start by identifying your CORE idea, then work through the other steps to build a message that resonates.

Why C.L.E.A.R. Matters The ability to communicate science effectively is more important than ever. Whether you’re addressing climate challenges, public health, or sustainability, clear communication builds trust, fosters understanding, and inspires action. Let’s make science communication better together—one clear message at a time.
